In maart 1957 werd uiteindelijk het Verdrag van Rome ondertekend door de zes oorspronkelijke lidstaten waarmee de Europese Economische gemeenschap het licht zagen:

De EEG beoogde het instellen van een gemeenschappelijke markt, waarbij belemmeringen in de vorm van handelstarieven en quota's zouden worden afgeschaft.
Ook werd er een Gemeenschappelijk douanetarief ingesteld aan de buitengrens.
Daarnaast droegen de lidstarten op beleidsterreinen als mededinging, transport en met name landbouw, soevereinitiet over aan de EEG.
De EEG stonden aanvankelijk los van de EGKS.

in 1963 bepaalde het in Van Gend en Loos dat het Europese recht rechtstreeks werking kan hebben en een jaar later bepaalde het in Costa/ENEL eveeens dat het Europese recht voorrang heeft op het nationale recht.
