This essay will compare the novel’s opening chapter with the opening sequence of Cary Fukunaga’s 2011 adaption of Jane Eyre up to the red room scene. It will look at what parts the film emphasise and how the director manages to convey to the viewer the feelings of Jane seeing as the novel has a narrative voice which the film does not have. Then it will conclude whether the adaptation did manage to convey some of the key features of the novel.
