Enzymes are biological molecules - large macromolecular protein complexes - that function to increase the rates of chemical reactions. Enzymes react with their substrates to form enzyme-substrate complexes which are inter-converted into products. Enzymes increase reaction rates by lowering the activation energy needed for substrates to become converted into products, while increasing the amount of Gibbs Free Energy available to do work. Enzymes are NOT consumed during the reaction!
